Easy, 3-mile round-trip, 700-foot elevation gain
Quiet and not too challenging, this hike is a refreshing alternative to some of the city’s more congested trails. Since it starts at the educational Nature Center, it’s also a great spot to bring kids. Take the Stough Canyon Mountainway fire road, which begins just a few feet from the center. At the top of a small ridge, with Burbank on one side and the San Gabriels on the other, make a left onto Chandler Fire Road. It looks as if you could walk straight into the clouds as you follow the ridge to a bench and a dented picnic table, with Bob Hope Airport in the near distance. Turning back on Chandler Fire Road, look for a marker for the Old Youth Camp Trail on your right. The footpath curves through tall creosote bushes and spiky aloe plants until it reaches the brick chimney and the foundation of the abandoned youth camp lodge. The trail picks up again on the far left side of the ruins and joins up with the Stough Canyon Mountainway, above the Nature Center. View map.
