Best Tableware, August 2011

If Gearys is the Victoria and Albert Museum of tableware, with pieces from every style and period, then Fitzsu is the Tate Modern, exhibiting contemporary artisans. From the Walter Gropius-inspired white dinner service by Rosenthal to the Asian-inflected plates by tattoo artist Paul Timman for Ink Dish to the edgy Americana style of Jason Miller's Seconds collection, the shop reveals an eye for the subtly extraordinary. There's a trove of sculptural Alessi items, while the Royal Copenhagen offerings are minimalist to the max. The Pott flatware with five-tine forks is a treat. Our absolute favorites, though, are the plates with folksy bird patterns by Iittala's Klaus Haapaniemi, who has designed for Diesel and Dolce & Gabbana.
