By 6 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays all 14 courts at Sorrento Beach in Santa Monica are full of coed doubles teams with one thing on their minds: scoring. What started as an impromptu gathering of social-minded spikers has coalesced into spring and summer leagues ($65 for nine-week sessions) under the auspices of the National Beach Volleyball Organization. Founder Charlie Frank pairs couples according to their ability. Beginners can sign up for periodic clinics ($15 each) to develop their pass-set-hit skills. Many an evening ends at Marix Tex-Mex restaurant in Santa Monica Canyon and many a season in marriages—seven at last count.
