Best Boy-Watching Beach, August 2006
In early June the AVP volleyball tournament in Hermosa Beach
announces summer like the crack of a starter’s pistol, a sea of professional beach boys—the mythic eight-pack is commonplace—sweating and grunting their way closer to the Olympics. It’s an appropriate beginning for the summer-long festival of gawking at Hermosa. Even amateur players look like triathletes, and the gauntlet of bars leading to the pier is testimony to their dedication to the game. The beautiful girls draw the beautiful boys, and everyone else is free to stand on the sidelines and stare. Anyone over 22 needs to make sure their self-image is in proper working order before venturing into the fray.
