Profile

Best Reggaeton Radio Station, May 2006

Reggaeton has taken hold of L.A. as nowhere else. With roots in Panama and Puerto Rico, the musical form broke two years ago with Daddy Yankee’s “Gasolina.” The repetitive, innocuous hooks and hypnotic percussion combined with a Brooklyn B-boy swagger and machine-gun lyrical spitting in Spanish and English make for a steady stream of dance-floor grooves.  Latino 96.3 FM bridges West Coast Chicano acts like Akwid and Malverde with Caribbeans like Tego Calderon, Don Omar, Ivy Queen, and underground favorite Bimbo. That’s how the station earns its billing as “the new Latino.”
