Best New Band, July 2008

Ever wonder what happened to the cool-looking clerks at Aron’s Records, which closed in 2005? One went on to form a band that’s among the city’s most intriguing. No AGE, two guys with simple instruments and plain names—Dean Spunt (the former clerk) on drums and vocals, Randy Randall on guitar and loop pedal—have brought a multilayered artistic sensibility to downtown’s music scene that seemed lost after Al’s Bar closed in 2001. The band’s debut album, Nouns, released on Sub Pop in the spring, rolls a mash of crashing punk and sprawling atmosphere. The duo, which has played impromptu gigs at the L.A. River and the Central Library, also designs clothing, publishes a zine, and curates art shows.
