Wide swaths of Los Angeles remain a mystery even to seasoned Angelenos. Some neighborhoods are so stigmatized, so clouded by misperception, that they are not just overlooked but avoided. What if these enclaves were, in fact, L.A.’s greatest treasure, their cultural and artistic and culinary attractions more captivating than the glitter of Hollywood or the glamour of Rodeo Drive? That is the premise of Trekking Los Angeles: Local Adventures in a Global City , a monthly series of tours hosted by nonprofit community organizer LA Commons and backed by UCLA’s Department of Urban Planning. This month’s tour of Leimert Park coincides with the World Jazz Festival, so the guided neighborhood stroll can be followed by a concert in the park. Both are free. » 213-705-4457.
