Best Children's Book Store, February 2004
The San Marino Toy and Book Shoppe is so stuffed with goodies that if you’re in a hurry, you’d better ask for help, because you could spend hours browsing Betty Takeuchi’s trove of playtime classics. Owner Matthew Abramowitz has reenergized Storyopolis, the upscale illustrators’ gallery and bookstore on Robertson. Still, for kid-lit purists, it’s hard to beat Sharon Hearn’s Children’s Book World.
Hearn has an inventory of more than 75,000 titles, among them an impressive number in oft-neglected categories like works for middle readers and nonfiction. Customers cherish the ease with which the staff can find esoteric volumes and handle requests from three-year-olds such as “I like animals. Help me.”
