Best Eco-Furniture, August 2010
We’ve been browsing Environment Furniture since it came to L.A. in 2005. We were charmed by patched, heavy-duty canvas that was repurposed from truck backs for upholstered couches. A sofa made of used Levi’s (no pockets or seams) is a hoot, and tables of wood salvaged from derelict Brazilian houses and barns are a fine idea. The store’s latest coup is creating home fabrics by power washing and dying vintage pup tent canvas in organic inks in shades of indigo, green, and eggplant. The aesthetic tends toward mid-century modern and thick slabs of wood. Although the pieces don’t come cheap (beds start at around $3,000), you’re helping Mother Nature. A factory store in the Helms Bakery complex sells floor models, discontinued items, and other discounted merchandise.
