Everything about Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger's restaurant shouts zany—the bright colors, the artwork, the spin on Mexican food, and the margaritas that are $4.50 at happy hour. This is a cheery spot with south-of-the-border comfort cuisine, from lamb tacos to skirt steak. It's often crowded, but the wait's not bad, particularly if you find a stool at the bar.
Best Limeade, May 2005
The ginger limeade at Clementine in Century City has a Zen-like subtlety that gets us every time. We'd even deem it the best in L.A., were it not for the Border Grill's minty lime cooler, an elixir with all the zip of a mojito but none of the hangover—which is why it's been dubbed the Shirley Temple of the Cuban cocktail world. It's so fresh, it snaps. The goods? Freshly squeezed lime blended with sugar, sparkling water, and mint leaves (add some white rum and—presto—you're in Mojitoville). Border Grill serves it in a festive purple and orange glass with a wedge of lime on top. »
