Best Gay Bingo, August 2010
At “Legendary Bingo” at Hamburger Mary's, drag queen Belle Aire signals it ain't church night when she hits the stage and trills, “Hello, bitches!” Men and women, gays and straights—all are welcome at the packed games hosted by Bingo Boy (no one uses real names here, it seems; his vivacious support team also includes Bridgette of Madison County and Red Hot Willam). The money raised goes to various charities. Game winners don't just get to scream “Bingo!” in their finest falsetto; they win prizes such as restaurant gift certificates and Barbies and receive a dose of humiliation (they're beaned with crumpled losing cards and must run the length of the bar while the whole place chants “Pelt them, pelt them, all the way down and all the way back”). We recommend getting to the 7 p.m. game early and grabbing a bite (the mini burger sampler is tasty); there is usually a line for the 9 p.m. game. Reservations are accepted only for parties of 8 or more.
