Best Location for Gay And Lesbian Civil Unions, August 2009

Proposition 8 may be the law (for now), but California ballot measures don’t quell the desire for marital bliss—and over-the-top weddings. Eclectic ceremonies for gay and lesbian couples continue, from Silver Lake backyard bonanzas to sunset services at El Matador Beach. For something more formal, it’s hard to beat the mission revival splendor of the 70-year-old Union Station downtown. One thousand guests can celebrate in the station’s main concourse, which rents for $6,500 a night. It has a 50-foot ceiling, ironwork chandeliers, and a sprawling ticket counter that doubles as a cocktail bar. Ceremony and reception alternatives include the lush garden setting of the south patio ($750 extra) and the adjacent Fred Harvey Restaurant ($5,000 a night), as seen in Judy Garland’s 1946 classic The Harvey Girls.
