Sometimes a piece of furniture is too big or too fragile to be moved to the House of Brienza. So shop owner Tony Brienza goes to the client’s home and begins “unraveling the puzzle,” as he calls the process of finding what ails a sagging dresser or distressed cabinet. He puts on white gloves to inspect a piece, then once the job begins he draws on his 60-plus years of experience, which started in the late 1940s when he apprenticed in Florence. Recently Brienza was summoned to the home of a patron whose 175-year-old curio cabinet was listing. He determined that the glue had loosened, requiring him to dismantle the base and reassemble it so that it was again in shape to display a lifetime oft chotchkes.
