Best Houseguest Drop-Off, August 2008

With its striking architecture, sweeping views and labyrinthine gardens, the Getty Center is an exhibit within itself. Opened in 1997 among the Santa Monica Mountains, it provides a panoramic view stretching from the ocean and San Gabriel Mountains to downtown Los Angeles. The Getty is a haven of European art and is home to an extensive collection of paintings, drawings, manuscripts, and sculptures dating from the Middle Ages to present day. The hilltop campus designed by Richard Meier juxtaposes lush gardens and open spaces with stark stone buildings and a grid-like framework to combine nature and urban culture. In addition to American and European photography within its permanent exhibitions, the Getty also presents several temporary exhibitions a year and numerous performances and lectures.
