Best Watch Repair, February 2006
“What will it take to set this one?” asked a customer holding a broken watch recently at Feldmar Watch Company. “An act of Congress,” cracked the clerk. Maybe it wasn’t a joke; if Feldmar can’t fix it, it’s pretty far gone. The shop is known for nursing mechanical and quartz timepieces back to life even after their manufacturers have pronounced them DOA. Ten full-time technicians work at the shop on Pico Boulevard’s bagel belt that is owned by the same family that founded the business downtown nearly 100 years ago. Jobs have included a pricey custom re-creation of a 1920s Rolex bezel on down to tightening a metal clasp on a Fossil—for which the shop refused to charge a fee.
