Best Cookies, August 2006
What with cupcakes crowding the landscape, we’ve been craving good old-fashioned, just-like-Mom-would-have-made cookies. None came close to those from Clementine Bakery & Café, where the sweets—and savories, for that matter—consistently get our top marks. The Valrhona chocolate in chef-owner Annie Miler’s chocolate chip cookies is still gooey, her gingersnaps are spicy without being harsh, and her peanut butter cookies were inhaled by our esteemed panel of judges in record time. She’s got snickerdoodles and marmalade thumbprints, too, and all are generously sized. The never-ending rehab of Santa Monica Boulevard makes getting to Clementine’s tricky, but it’s well worth the adventure of picking your way through the back streets.
