Profile

Best Accordionist, July 2006

Tony Hartenstein got his first big break as a teenager, when he was chosen to represent the music of Switzerland at the 1939 New York World’s Fair. With war on the horizon, he decided not to return to Europe and traveled the United States performing on his beloved Bachenbülach accordion. Hartenstein is a master of the instrument and can coax gorgeous, gentle breezes of melody from the ivory-and-wood-inlaid box he’s been squeezing for six decades. In April, Hartenstein started his new gig at Marla’s, a French bistro in Alhambra. Visit him and see why in the film Ten North Frederick, Gary Cooper called Hartenstein “much more Swiss than anything you’ll find in Switzerland.”
