Best Way to See the Los Angeles River, August 2012
Near Anthony C. Beilenson Park in Van Nuys, the Los Angeles River is unrecognizably beautiful, with thickets of trees clinging to its earthy embankments. Don't just look at it—paddle it. Last summer the Army Corps of Engineers allowed the Los Angeles Conservation Corps to lead groups of kayakers on a 1.5-mile stretch in the Sepulveda Basin. In June the program was given a five-year extension, with as many as 1,500 permits—issued through the LACC'S Paddle the L.A. River Web site—up for grabs. One- and two-hour excursions are being held Wednesday through Sunday until Labor Day.
