Best Vegan Ethiopian, August 2014

Like many of the city’s Ethiopian restaurants, Asli appeals to the droves of expatriates who traditionally “fast” on meat-and-dairy-free dishes some 200 days a year. The cheery spot’s new vegan menu also attracts Angelenos who hunger for its dainty lentil turnovers, fresh salads, and caramelized onion-laced vegetable stews. Chef-owner Firad Affi is the devoted purist behind the operation. He cooks most everything to order, prepares condiments in-house, and uses separate utensils for the smattering of meat items on the nonvegan menu.
