NKLA West L.A.
Best Animal Shelter Volunteering, August 2015
Lazy weekends are precious, but so are the animals in city shelters. Caring for cats and dogs at this well-maintained adoption facility offers ample emotional returns. After submitting an online application, you spend half a day learning the ropes, from handling difficult dogs to mastering the activity-log system. NKLA doesn’t demand monogamy, but it needs a commitment: those who volunteer must donate at least five hours a month for a minimum of six months. Once trained, you can play fetch with pups and (joy!) cuddle with kennel residents, but don’t wear your Sunday best—shedding is unavoidable, as is poop.
