It seems odd that until recently, this city known for its body awareness had more pet therapists than pet rehabilitation establishments. But thanks to the horse racing industry, which pioneered the use of water treadmills for quadrupeds, canine rehab finally is taking hold. Two Hands Four Paws (310-475-8555) helps dogs recuperate from surgery, injury, even paralysis. The West Los Angeles facility opened in 2003 after Leslie Gallagher McMahon, a certified massage and rehab therapist, restored a German shepherd’s use of its back legs via guided exercises in a swimming pool. In McMahon’s 1,500-square-foot space, up to 100 dogs a week regain strength through cardiovascular work, stretching, acupuncture, and massage.
