Park It

You can get to this bustling corner of northeast L.A. below Griffith Park without ever putting your key in the ignition. Los Feliz is best when experienced on foot

FRIDAY 2:45 P.M.

mythghosttown  Lately have found myself yelling behind the wheel. Cursing at stoplights. Begging for mercy (and a chance to merge). That’s right: L.A. traffic is driving me crazy—pun intended. So am now on this drafty subway platform, overnight bag in hand. Red Line, take me away.

FRIDAY 3:15 P.M.

mythghosttown Exiting the Vermont/ Sunset station, feel good to be traveling under my own power. No gridlock. No idiots impeding my flow. A few blocks east, the Los Feliz Lodge awaits. i’m in the red Casita, a comfy oasis, complete with kitchen and a tattered copy of Rabbit, Run. Will be happy here.

FRIDAY 4 P.M.

mythghosttown Naps are for weenies. Head down Sunset instead for a latte at intelligentsia. Pick up crackers and Saint andré from the Cheese Store of Silverlake, then make my way to the Mohawk General Store to browse. Later stop in at the Good Luck Bar. no valet, but who needs one?

SATURDAY 8 A.M.

mythghosttown Is that a yoga mat in the corner with a note saying it’s here for my use? Just enough time to make the 9 a.m. class at Yogavidala, tucked behind a 7-Eleven on Franklin. The owner, Patty Pierce, lays down enough mixed-level moves to make a girl hungry for the matzo brie at Fred 62.

SATURDAY NOON

mythghosttown The great thing about not being home is that the car isn’t the only thing I’m free of. no bills. no chores. Just a burl table on which to rest my feet. Where’s that cheese? ambling up Vermont to Skylight Books is the perfect diversion before a nap. Hmmm. Maybe naps aren’t so bad after all.

SATURDAY 7 P.M.

mythghosttown Time to eat again. Lots of places to choose from, all within easy reach. The Best Fish taco in ensenada is close by, but tonight merits a special treat. Swing up Hillhurst to Little Dom’s for a de- lectable hanger steak, then catch a first-run film in a vintage set- ting: the Vista theatre.

SUNDAY 8 A.M.

mythghosttown Up early and out the door for a jog in Griffith Park. after about three miles, it’s definitely time to stop at The Trails for an Egg in a Basket and a strong cup of joe, consumed at a picnic table be- neath the pines. Ponder how pretty L.a. is in the morning—and how easy that is to miss.

SUNDAY 11 A.M.

mythghosttown So little mileage cov- ered but so much truly seen. With the Los Feliz Lodge in my rearview mirror, I’m resolved: Must pay more atten- tion to what’s in front of me. Can I be in the driver’s seat without also feeling behind the eightball? More week- ends like this will help.
