Advice on getting into, out of, and around Las Vegas

theessentials_masa_t1.Cabbies at McCarran Airport like to take the freeway, which they’ll tell you is the fastest route. It’s also the priciest. To save $5 or $10, tell the driver you want the “most direct” route and to skip the (freeway-bound) airport tunnel.

theessentials_masa_t2. Lux Bus can get you to Vegas and back for about $100. While Megabus lacks Lux’s leather seats, its double-deckers are comfy and clean, with fares as low as $1. Or hold out for the X Train, which may roll out from Fullerton by January 1, 2014.

theessentials_masa_t3. If you drive, use Harmon Avenue, Frank Sinatra Drive, or Koval Lane (depending on your direction) to avoid Las Vegas Boulevard’s crushing traffic. And don’t cross the Strip at Sahara Avenue or Spring Mountain Road.
