On a cold morning it's hard to kick off the covers and lace up your New Balances. That’s why running groups are so great. Whether for moral support or the expertise it takes to run the Los Angeles Marathon, these guys can help.

L.A. Leggers
For $65 seasoned mentors guide pace groups through a 31-week training program that culminates with the marathon, although many of the 1,500 members focus on shorter distances. They meet Saturday mornings at 7 in Santa Monica.

Pasadena Pacers
Look for the red shirts by the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center every Saturday at 7 a.m. The group doesn’t charge runners but asks that they take turns bringing snacks for the 200 active members. Training programs for any distance are based on a walk-run model.

L.A. Road Runners
This organization works out of three locations (Venice, the Inland Empire, and Westlake Village) every Saturday at 7 a.m. For $240 you receive six months of training and entry to the marathon or, for $145, just the training.

 

Bike + Run
