Classic L.A. to Z: M is for MOVIE PALACES

The instant gratification of watching Star Wars on your iPad can’t make up for a thumb-size Darth Vader. And stadium seating and cup holders at the multiplex will never outshine the lavish interior of a grand old movie palace. Once upon a time L.A. had more palaces than almost any place on earth. The Orpheum and the Pantages, great venues to see a live band or musical, no longer show movies, but L.A. has some spectacular options for watching a first-run movie at a single-screen theater. At Grauman’s Chinese (6925 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, 323-461-3331), El Capitan (6838 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, 818-845-3110), and Fox Village (961 Broxton Ave., Westwood, 310-208-5576), the neon still flashes, the gilding still shimmers, and the chandeliers and plasterwork still transport you to another time.
