Classic L.A. to Z: R is for THE RAINBOW

Illustration Clint Hansen

If Lemmy, SLASH, and Lars are your Rat Pack, then the Rainbow Bar and Grill (9015 W. Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood, 310-278-4232) is your Toots Shor’s. By the time Guns N’ Roses paid homage to the joint in its 1992 video for “November Rain,” the Rainbow had been a rock star hangout for 20 years, hosting Led Zeppelin and John Lennon. The small A-frame building with red tuck-and-roll booths remains an unapologetic heavy-metal time capsule harking back to the days when the gods of the arena, rather than ordering bottle service from behind velvet ropes, were sitting at the next table, drinking beer and eyeing your girlfriend.
