Advice for Jews and Other Lovers

RonnaBev MRonna Glickman and Beverly Ginsburg are the authors of You'll Do a Little Better Next Time: A Guide to Marriage and Remarriage for Jewish Singles. The book is really, really hard to come by. We saw it in a second-second-hand book shop in a not-very-nice neighborhood in Istanbul, but it cost 3 Lira so we didn't buy it. We've asked Ronna & Bev to advise our readers on their relationship problems. Their advice is terrible.

1. I’m Jewish girl, 29 years old, and I’m dating a non-Jewish guy who will probably pop the question soon. He doesn’t have a real job right now, but he’s in a great band (and he’s very shaggy and cute!). Should I say yes?

RONNA: Not Jewish? 29? I just got a migraine. Break up with him. If you miss him, you can buy his CD.

BEVERLY: Ooooh… What kind of music does he play? I love music. I love Mama Mia. I took my daughter, Rachelle, the pretty one, to see it in New York City as a present for getting a 2.0 last semester. I wish she would meet a musical man who would take her to Europe with him. I love Europe. What was the question?

 2. I’m a computer programmer who just moved to Los Angeles, and it’s practically impossible to meet girls. Where should I go? What should I do? I do NOT want to date an actress!

RONNA: What’s the issue? You’re on the computer all day. Figure it out—ever heard of J-Date? As far as where you should go—how about a gymnasium and a tanning salon? Nobody’s interested.

BEVERLY: What’s wrong with an actress? Puh-leese… Brangelina? Jamie Lee Curtis? What about Shoshanna Lonstein, she’s not good enough for you? I once saw Katie Couric in a ladies room, you believe that?

3. I’ve been married for ten years, and my husband and I have two adorable kids, but I have a very hot yoga instructor who I think is interested in me. The problem: I’m attracted, too. The other problem: My instructor is a woman! Should I act on my impulse?

RONNA: You’re married, of course you shouldn’t. Unless, of course, you think you’re actually gay in which case you’re wasting everybody’s time. Get out of the marriage and into the right situation. Does she own the yoga studio? Factor that in.

BEVERLY: Of course you should act out on your impulse! And you should invite your husband to see if you can all have fun together. One time, I “experimented” by kissing Barbara Levitt in front of my ex, Arthur. But I also once dated a man who smoked marijuana and I put on 12 pounds in two weeks. What, Ronna? We were talking about experimenting.

See them at UCB Theatre on May 22.

The Vision and Art of Shinjo Ito

Parinirvana LLast night, the preview party for The Vision and Art of Shinjo Ito was the quintessential Westside art event. People in traditional Japanese robes (and those cool split-toe shoes), people with pink hair, people in fedoras, and a Shinjo cocktail with sake and champagne. What could be more Buddhist? The space was built specifically for this exhibition: three open stories of white and exposed brick; Ito's art has meditation and awareness in mind (he was also a religious leader) and the gallery reflects that. The On Ensemble, an Asian drum-based  fusion group with a self-taught throat singer, should have played longer.

The third floor of the gallery has groovy kids' books on Shinjo Ito and Buddhism and a meditation space that will host yoga and meditation during the course of the exhibition, which runs through June 29.
