Taste of Tamales — 12/15|
La Placita Olvera comes alive this season with the smell of freshly steamed tamales. At the “Taste of Tamales Food Festival” from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., Mexican-style, Central American-style, and South American-style tamales will be served to an expected 20,000 attendees. Scotch and Cigar Dinner at Messhall Kitchen — 12/12|
Toast the end of another busy week with small-batch scotch, Old Oaks Cigar Company cigars, and a four-course dinner. Tickets are $95 a person and include bacon cheddar biscuits, braised pork belly, Dailuaine 21-year Exclusive Malts Single Cask Single Malt, Cameronbridge 34-year Duncan Taylor Grain Scotch, and something sweet to finish it off. Can cake cure the blues? Local baker Rebecca Swanner is betting on it. She hosts L.A.’s second Depressed Cake Shop pop-up from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. until sold out on Saturday at St. Joseph Center in Venice. Find pies, tarts, cookies, and more in shades of gray—but one bite uncovers the vibrant hues within. Dozens of bakers are chipping in to raise awareness—and money for the treatment—of depression. Noggin’ Hoggin at Ray’s and Stark Bar — 12/16
Next Monday indulge in two of the holiday season’s richest treats—pork and eggnog—at Ray’s second annual Noggin’ Hoggin. Crispy pig tails with mint and chili, house-made pigs-in-a-blanket, and “Weston’s Gloves Off” eggnog all make their appearance at this nose-to-tail shindig. Executive chef Kris Morningstar rounds out the night by carving up a whole roasted pig. Menu is a la carte, $7 – $15 per plate. More information.
