Keep On Truckin: Holy Crap! There’s A Soup Truck

Finally. It’s called the Souper Truck (@soupertruck), it launched last week, and it’s run by the dudes who own the Green Truck (one of the oldies but still one of the goodies among luxe loncheras). So new that its streetside face still boasts graphics from the previous occupant (a smoothie purveyor), the Souper Truck has been parking in front of 5900 Wilshire Blvd. (a.k.a. Los Angeles magazine HQ) nearly every weekday, ladling out bowls of clam chowder, vegan tomato bisque, and cheeseburger soup. Yes, cheeseburger soup.

Imagine the gritty texture and tart, cheddar flavor of the best broccoli cheese soups -- with chunks of grilled burger replacing the broccoli. Slices of raw tomato and a cornichon serve as garnish. For the first three or four bites, it’s scintillating; after an entire bowl, you may regret your decision.

We assume the Souper Truck is a seasonal endeavor, since Los Angeles gets 80-degree days even in the middle of November. The menu also includes lemongrass chicken soup, vegan options like ratatouille and cheesy kale soup (made with almond milk), and heavier options like French onion soup and turkey chili. The price is right: $6 per bowl and a few extra bucks if you want a bread bowl or additional toppings. (Bacon bits taste great on the vegan kale soup.) Bring on the chill, please.
