Land of the Free: 4th of July Events that Won’t Break the Bank

From block party to stars-and-stripes Speedos

Happy 237th, America! On this, our nation’s birthday, it’s our duty as citizens to (what else?) party. For some, that means wholesome celebrations with the family. For others, it means consuming so much food and booze that you’ll want to know where all the weekend’s DUI checkpoints will be.

Whatever your patriotic poison, there’s something for everyone in L.A. today. Most of you probably know where you’ll be watching fireworks tonight. For those who don’t yet have plans, we’ve got you covered with these admission-free Independence Day events.

4th of July Block Party at Grand Park
Head over to Civic Center for the first-ever 4th of July block party at Grand Park. Enjoy live music and tasty food trucks until the sun goes down then settle in for fireworks set against downtown’s high-rises. First band goes on at 2:10 p.m. 200 N. Grand Ave.

Fireworks at Marina del Rey
Catch the 20-minute fireworks show over the marina from any of these three locations: Fisherman’s Village, Burton Chace Park or Marina Beach. The first rocket goes off at 9 p.m., but you’ll want to get there early for parking and a good viewing spot.

Mr. and Ms. Muscle Beach
For a more unusual Independence Day, trek over to Venice and check out this male and female bodybuilding contest. Prejudging starts at 10 a.m. with final judging at 1 p.m. There aren’t any fireworks but the starred-and-striped speedos should provide enough entertainment. 1800 Ocean Front Walk, Venice.

Exposition Park Firework Extravaganza
The celebration at Exposition Park starts at noon, and the free fireworks show kicks off at 9 p.m. 700 Exposition Park Dr.

City of Malibu Fireworks
At least four firework displays are scheduled to go off around 9 p.m. from the Malibu coast (in the 21500, 22300 and 27900 blocks of the PCH and on Malibu Colony Road). Set up a blanket on the nearby beach to watch.

Woodland Hills July 4th Fireworks Extravaganza
The Valley keeps it classy with a free concert from the Los Angeles Pierce Symphonic Winds at Warner Center Park followed by fireworks at exactly 9:08 p.m. 5800 Topanga Canyon Blvd.
