Pulp Fiction: Crime Books That Michael Connelly Admires

The Shortcut Man
By P.G. Sturges

I’ve read a lot of crime fiction set in Los Angeles, so when I find somebody with something new, I’m drawn to it. This is about a problem solver who works off the books, and the way he goes about solving crimes is unique. The author has a cool way of connecting small problems people have to a larger social reflection.

North of Montana
By April Smith

This novel uses the L.A. landscape in interesting ways. Smith also pierced the veil of FBI superiority and invulnerability and showed what it’s like to be a woman in that bureaucracy.
