Vintage Matchbooks From Classic L.A. Places: Hop Louie (AKA The Golden Pagoda)

The only way you could improve the stunning five-story pagoda at downtown’s Hop Louie is to cover it with neon – oh wait, they did! This ancient and wonderful Chinese restaurant filled with streamline corners and ornate lanterns was originally called the Golden Pagoda and opened three years after “New Chinatown” debuted in 1938. Designers from Warner Bros. relit the neon and spiffed the place up last summer when it was used for a scene in Gangster Squad.
