Hollywood Park Is Making Its Final Lap
Inglewood’s Betfair Hollywood Park—where some iconic moments in horse racing history took place—will close after 75 years this December. Don’t hold your breath for last-minute funding, either; Track president Jack Liebau said demolition should begin after the final race of the autumn meeting, which will take place December 22. The Hollywood Park Casino will remain, but the loss of the track and stables is significant in the horseracing world, even though news of its shuttering has been somewhat expected. The racetrack has been down on its luck for years. In 2012, Chris Nichols reported the San Francisco developer who purchased the property in 2005 was planning to put close to 3,000 homes and a shopping center on the lot when the market picked up.
Celebrity—It’s For the Birds
Dolly, a 2-year-old California condor who lives at the Los Angeles Zoo, has been named the nation’s first official ambassador for the endangered bird—and apparently, she’s a natural. The zoo’s chief veterinarian, Curtis Eng, told the Los Angeles Daily News Dolly will “allow children and adults to see her up close, to really appreciate the majesty of these birds.” Dolly has been under professional care since she was rescued and treated for an upper wing fracture when she was just 5-months-old.
The LAPD is Headed to Washington, D.C.
The White House has announced President Barack Obama will welcome LAPD officers to the Rose Garden tomorrow where he will present a group of two sergeants, nine officers, and a K-9 officer with the National Association of Police Organizations “Top Cop” Award for the handling of a carjacking and shootout in Los Angeles last September that led to the capture of homicide suspect Ian Schlesinger.
