You Can’t Eat the Sunshine is a weekly podcast series produced by Kim Cooper and Richard Schave in which the Esotouric founders talk with L.A. personalities about the city’s myths, contradictions, and inspirations.

This week, Richard and Kim talk with Southern California tile expert Brian Kaiser about intellectual evenings at Pacific Palisades’ Villa Aurora that drew artists like Charlie Chaplin. They also chat with with retired National Guard Lt. Col. Tom Lasser to learn about the Joint Forces airbase in Los Alamitos, which played a crucial role in Southern California’s aerospace legacy.

In this exclusive clip, Lasser recalls some of the airbase’s more famous visitors (ranging from the Goodyear Blimp to the President of the United States), and Kaiser discusses how writers Bertolt Brecht and Thomas Mann refused to be in the same room together.
