Podcast Preview: How Good Intentions Might Be Hurting the Homeless on Skid Row
You Can’t Eat the Sunshine is a weekly podcast series produced by Kim Cooper and Richard Schave in which the Esotouric founders talk with L.A. personalities about the city’s myths, contradictions, and inspirations.
This week, Richard and Kim chat with Dave Peters, Professor of Political Science at Biola University and board member the of La Mirada Historical Preservation Advisory Council, about the school’s rich history, and with Rev. Andy Bales of the Union Rescue Mission, which has been on downtown’s Skid Row for 122 years. They also discuss the changes underway at the Grand Central Market, a Googie style supermarket in Highland Park, and more.
In this exclusive clip, Peters talks about the establishment of Biola in downtown Los Angeles and Reverend Bales describes the public policy crisis facing Skid Row “There are people who actually think they are doing good who are advocating for the rights and freedom of people experiencing homelessness,” he says, “but what they are really helping to do is keep Skid Row, Skid Row, keep it from ever changing and becoming a more safe, peaceful place.”
