Park It: Tongva Park Celebrates Its Grand Opening This Saturday
Santa Monica debuts a new six-acre green space
If you’ve been to Santa Monica lately, you may have noticed two new green spaces—nearly seven ocean-view acres’ worth, in fact, between Tongva Park and Ken Genser Square.
This Saturday, the city will be celebrating the grand opening of Tongva Park, located between Ocean Avenue and Main Street. Designed by James Corner Field Operations, the team behind New York’s famed High Line (a historic freight rail-cum-public park on Manhattan’s West Side), Tongva Park now sits on a site that was once a parking lot and goes a long way towards making the city feel more cohesive.
“The park is a critical linkage between the Civic Center, Palisades Park, the Pier, and downtown,” said Karen Ginsberg, Director of Community and Cultural Services. “We had hundreds of people participate in the community engagement process for the park’s design, and it has become exactly what was envisioned.”
At this weekend’s community fete, visitors will be able to enjoy music, crafts, food trucks, special activities related to the history of the Tongva and expert tours from the park’s designer, public artist, and construction project manager.
