MamaLA: A Cheekie Make-Up Secret
Yasmine was very pregnant with her first baby, Maverick, when we visited with a mom friend who is also a make-up artist. Soraya, who had a one-year-old at the time, asked their mama pal to suggest products portable enough for a crowded diaper bag and fast enough for an under-a-minute make-up job. Weeks after Maverick’s birth, Yasmine understood why. Gone were the days of meticulously crafting smoky eyes while perched at her Danish modern vanity. With a screaming baby buckled into an ineffective vibrating baby chair by her feet and a minute left before she was officially outside of the acceptable new mommy late period, she reached for the little Julie Hewett Peachie Cheekie pot and Camellia Balm Soraya had gotten her. A few pats of Cheekie on the apples of her cheeks and a swipe across her lips, topped off with a quick dab of her Camellia Balm for a hint of shine and she looked human again, like she had this mom thing under control. With camellia oil as their base, Julie Hewett’s lipsticks are made from natural ingredients and her Camellia Balm is organic—definite pluses for kisses on baby’s tender cheeks. Another bonus: Julie Hewett is an Angeleno, and most of her products are locally made.
Since then we’ve both graduated to sneaking in a little concealer and sometimes even mascara or one of Hewett’s iconic red lipsticks for date night, but these two little items remain our never-fail, always-with-us, make-up standbys.
With seven children ranging in age from five months to sixteen years between them, sisters Yasmine Delawari Johnson and Soraya Delawari Dancsecs are experts at parenting in L.A. They take a break from PTA board meetings, cooking, and producing films to blog at CityThink each Thursday.
