Get Your Telescopes Out, Asteroid 1998 QE2 Is Flying By
Asteroid 1998 QE2—a 1.7 mile-wide space rock—is about to do a fly-by of Earth, and according to Paul Chodas of NASA’s Near-Earth Object Program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, it’s “one of the big ones.” The asteroid is expected to reach its closest distance to Earth—3.6 million miles—Friday at 1:59 p.m. PT. To raise awareness of space rocks and the potential hazards they post to the planet, The White House is hosting a Google+ Hangout with NASA deputy administrator Lori Garver, Planetary Society executive director Bill Ne, and other space science experts titled “We the Geeks” tomorrow from 11 a.m. to noon—because logging on sure beats making a sign that reads WELCOME TO EARTH.
