Mayoral candidates Eric Garcetti and Wendy Greuel are headed for a runoff (Los Angeles Daily News reports they received almost 33% and 29% of the vote, respectively), as are City Attorney hopefuls Mike Feuer and Carmen Trutanich, and City Controller candidates Dennis Zine and Ron Galperin.
Few races were decided in Tuesday’s election. Bob Blumenfield (District 3), Paul Koretz (District 5), Filipe Fuentes (District 7), Mike Bonin (District 11), and Joe Buscaino (District 15) were elected to the City Council. Races for other districts will be decided by runoffs.
Monica Garcia will remain on the board of the LAUSD as will Steve Zimmer, while Mike Eng and Ernest Henry Moreno each secured trustee positions for Los Angeles Community College. Measure A, which would have increased sales tax by half a cent, did not pass. Charter B, however, did receive a majority vote. The results of these and other races are charted clearly by NBCLA here.
While exact numbers are not yet available, voter turn out appears to have been very low. With runoff elections set for May 21, candidates still in the running have a new opportunity to engage with potential voters and drum up excitement for local politics. Said Trutanich, “The race is now on.”
