The Freshman Six: Meet First Time City Councilman Mitch O'Farrell

District Thirteen's new representative fills out our questionnaire for City Hall’s fresh faces

The campaign is over but your job has just begun. Which is harder: taking office, or beating your opponent in the primary?
Both winning the election and serving my constituents have been extremely rewarding parts of my journey.

What did you wear on your first day as councilman?
A suit and tie—and my new councilmember lapel pin!

As you get to know your route to your new office, have you found a place to stop for coffee along the way?
Cafecito Organico on Hoover, north of Temple.

What did you bring with you to make your new desk feel like home?
I'm working to showcase the work of local artists in my office. Once the installations are in place, we'll have an open house for the community.

It’s lunchtime: brown bag, or eat out?
It depends on my schedule, but for the most part I've been eating on the go.

What are you most looking forward to in your term?
I want to make it easier for small, independently owned shops and restaurants to do business with the City. These business owners are vital to making the 13th District so special!

What is your top priority?
During my first few weeks as an elected official, I have mostly dealt with opportunities for economic development. As the new chair of the Arts, Parks, Health, Aging and River Committee, the L.A. River ranks high on my list of priorities. I look forward to educating more Angelenos about the waterway and seeing what dreams take shape here.

Sum up your feelings about your first few days at work in three words.
Amazing, awe-inspiring, and humbling

Mitch O'Farrell may technically be a freshman, but he is a District 13 veteran due to his experience as deputy with previous councilmember Eric Garcetti. He is a quality guy and will work hard for his constituents as well as for the City as a whole.
