National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

Locals can get rid of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs this weekend as part of the Drug Enforcement Administration's National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day this Saturday. The DEA says disposing of unused medication by flushing it down the toilet or throwing it in the trash poses potential safety and health hazards—so this really is a better option.

Last September, Americans turned in 488,395 pounds of prescription drugs at over 5,200 sites. In its five previous Take Back events, the DEA and its partners took in more than 2 million pounds of pills.

Here’s where you can bring your medications for disposal between 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.:

Kaiser West LA
6041 Cadillac Avenue
Parking Lot #3

Kaiser Panorama City
13652 Cantara St.

Kaiser Harbor City
25825 S. Vermont Ave.

Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center
4760 West Sunset Blvd.

Vermont Pavilion
25825 S. Vermont Ave.

L.A.'s Gun Buyback

Los Angeles' annual gun buyback event will be held May 4 at four locations. As they have in the past, participants will receive a Ralph’s card or Visa pre-paid card loaded with as much as $200 for those who offer up assault weapons and up to $100 for those turning in handguns, rifles, and shotguns. All gun returns are anonymous. Once they are surrendered, all firearms will be checked to see if they are stolen; such weapons will be returned to their rightful owners. The remaining guns will be destroyed by the LAPD.

Since 2009, the Gun Buyback Program has collected nearly 10,000 firearms throughout L.A. The most recent buyback, held in December following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in Connecticut, brought in more than 2,000 guns.

The event will run from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the following locations:

The Los Angeles Fire Department Frank Hotchkin Training Academy
1700 Stadium Way

Park & Ride Parking Lot
1300 W. Pacific Coast Highway

Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church
7900 S. Western Ave.

Van Nuys Masonic Building Association
14750 Sherman Way
