It Happened This Week in L.A. History: Downtown Heats Up
September 27, 2010
The City of Angels experienced a hellish heat wave that broke more than a record. Following moderate summer weather, the temperature rose to 113 degrees, the highest on record since 1877. The all-time high hit downtown around 12:15 p.m. Shortly thereafter, USC’s National Weather Thermometer broke.
In response, LAUSD canceled outdoor activities and more than 30,000 residents experienced heat-related power outages. Residents were encouraged to visit cooling centers in recreational facilities, libraries, and senior centers, but most headed for the beach causing many beaches to increase the number of lifeguards on duty.
