The LAPD yesterday, along with the FBI, arrested 24-year-old Pomona resident Kyle Bangayan for making violent threats against local schools. The suspect was arrested at his parents' home on North New Hampshire Avenue after he made threatening comments referencing Friday’s Connecticut school shooting on Facebook.

Nine firearms—including rifles, a shotgun, handguns, and ammunition—were discovered and seized at the home. Bangayan is being held on bail for $500,000.

The LAPD followed up the arrest by today announcing another of the city’s gun buyback programs, to take place on December 26th, 2012. To date, Los Angeles has hosted four gun buyback events as a part of Mayor Villaraigosa’s Gang Reduction and Youth Development initiative. All past gun buybacks have taken place over Mother’s Day weekend, but next year’s event has been pushed up in light of the shooting that killed 20 elementary students and six educators in Newtown, Connecticut last week.

The upcoming buyback day will permit Angelenos to rid themselves of their guns anonymously, no questions asked, with the LAPD awarding up to $100 in Ralphs and Visa gift cards for pistols and up to $200 in gift cards for assault weapons. All guns turned in will be destroyed by the department.

The gun buyback program has been mostly successful since its inception in 2009. 1,673 firearms were collected in May, making for a total of 7,942 guns recovered over the past four years.

UPDATE:  The buybacks will be held between 9 and 4 at two locations: The Van Nuys Masonic Temple at 14750 Sherman Way and the Los Angeles Sports Arena, Parking Lot 6 at 3939 S. Figueroa St.
