It Happened This Week in L.A. History

March 26, 1972

The L.A. Lakers win the 69th of their 82 season games, smashing the current NBA record. On his home court at the Forum, star center Wilt Chamberlain outdribbles the Seattle SuperSonics, steering his team to a 124 - 98 victory in their last matchup of the season. Coach Bill Sharman is named NBA Coach of the Year.

Weeks later, the Lakers beat the Knicks for the 1972 national championship. Their record of 69 season wins stood strong for over 20 years, until the Bulls snagged 72 victories in 1996.
