Paddle the L.A. River

It’s time to update Life of the L.A. River, our guide to the city’s namesake waterway. City Councilmen Tony Cardenas and Ed Reyes suited up in life vests yesterday for the maiden voyage of Paddle the Los Angeles River, a program designed to assess the future for the river’s recreational purposes.

Paddle the Los Angeles River is the first non-motorized boating program, and it will run from August 13 to September 25 (Saturdays and Sundays only). The program offers a 1.5-mile canoe and kayak trip along the Los Angeles River in the San Fernando Valley, where supervisors will educate participants about the history and future of the river.  Certified guides, including a ranger from the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority, will lead each tour.

The logistics: There will be two trips per day with 10 participants per tour.  Each trip will include a boating clinic, educational guest speakers, and the necessary boating and safety equipment. There is a $50 participation fee and a $3.74 handling fee. Check out Paddle the L.A. River! for more information.

For $50 bucks?! Seriously, how is this economically sound for the average Angeleno. Don't get me wrong, great idea but one that is only at the reach of very few.

I agree with Sanda. $50 bucks is crazy. You know you're going to get some foul odor while paddling in your adventure, plus you are endangering yourself to the hostile natives around the area. Good idea, bad deal.

Yes. It's pricey, but most things in Los Angeles are. Think of the adventure. I'd love to go. Yes. The price is holding me back.
