Ask Chris: The Empty Rapid Bus Mystery
Where are they headed if there’s no one along for the ride?
Q: I saw three red Rapid buses cruising the 10 freeway while they were completely empty. Were they possessed by speed demons?
A: In the bus business it’s known as “deadheading,” and while those vehicles aren’t tie-dyed, they do like to jam uninterrupted. There are 50 percent more Rapids going west as east during the morning rush hour, so the empties return to the garage as soon as they’ve dropped off their riders, which explains the apparitions.
