Slide Show: Hollywood In Miniature
Redondo Beach artist Jeff Matsuno has miniaturized some of my favorite places. His three dimensional, photorealistic wall sculptures of Hollywood landmarks like the Pantages Theatre and the Frolic Room are crafted with amazing intense detail. His renditions of Sardi’s and Schwab’s Drugstore take to me to long-gone places I’ve always wanted to visit. His devotion to accuracy, like working neon, teensy cigarette butts, and lovingly rendered rust barnacles, bring extinct creations back to life and force you to appreciate all the fine textures of the city. Matsuno restored a monastery in Italy, worked with light artist James Turrell in Arizona, and handcrafted surfboards and sailboats in Long Beach. The exhibition, Ghosts Of Hollywood, is at the Hollywood Heritage museum through May.
