Mid Century Master Architect W.A. Sarmiento Dies At 91

Architect Wenceslaus Sarmiento passed away on November 24th in Santa Monica after a long illness. The designer was born in Peru, trained with iconic modernist Oscar Niemeyer, and created some of the most beautiful and sophisticated buildings in Southern California. Since most of them were banks, his name was little known outside of that world until the Los Angeles Conservancy Modern Committee worked to save two of his Glendale beauties a decade ago. Wence became a friend, and last year at this time I helped present him with the ModCom’s Modern Master award. He was an enthusiastic optimist who held great belief in the future, and I’ll miss him. Los Angeles magazine’s Greg Goldin profiled Sarmiento in 2001.
