Ask Chris: Tackling L.A.’s Football Deficit

Q: I recall we had some kind of football team in 2000. Was that the last time L.A. had pro pigskin?

A:  Touchdown. In 1998, Casey Wasserman (grandson of the famous talent agent Lew) purchased the Los Angeles Avengers for $5 million—making him, at 24, the youngest owner of an athletic team. The Avengers, part of the Arena Football League, played at Staples Center from 2000 until their last game, on June 14, 2008. The squad joins the Rams, Raiders, Chargers, Cobras, Wildcats, Bulldogs, Xtreme, and Dons as now-defunct city teams. Meanwhile plans for an NFL stadium are in a timeout.
