Happy Birthday to the Happiest Place on Earth. Disneyland turns 58 today, so here’s a look back at day one when Walt made this short but sweet dedication. Here's a clip from the Walt Disney Family Museum.
"To all who come to this happy place: welcome. Disneyland is your land. Here age relives fond memories of the past… and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future. Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams, and the hard facts that have created America… with the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world."
Walt’s words are so moving. I really do think about the “hard facts that created America” when I’m on Tom Sawyer (yes, I still call it Tom Sawyer) Island or listening to robot Lincoln, or walking the plank sidewalks of Frontierland. I’ve heard stories of kids-turned- scientists being inspired by the original Tomorrowland, and old folks reminiscing about towns that remind them of Main Street U.S.A. I don’t know if Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, or this rumored Star Wars-themed reskinning of Tomorrowland are in keeping with this ideal, but Disneyland continues to charm and amaze. Congratulations, Walt.
